5. Frequently Asked Questions

Q:        What will be the focus of the report, making comparisons between different countries or comparing NGOs within a country?

A:         The survey reports are focused on a single country.  However, a consistent methodology is used in all of the surveys, so the content in each country will be comparable.

Q:        What will be the Return on my Investment of US$900 in the survey, apart from the data?

A.         Click here for Return on Investment information.

Q:        Will you be looking at salary scales, or actual salaries paid to staff?

A:         We will collect salary scales, and the average actual rate for each position.

Q:        Will you be looking at salaries only or at the whole package of benefits?

A:        The survey covers base salary, plus all non-salary elements of compensation, whether paid in cash or in-kind.  For example, we value food & beverages, recreational activities, housing and transport assistance, subsidised loans, etc., etc.

Q:        How do you ensure that the job matching is done accurately?

A:         Accurate job matching is the single most important aspect of a survey.  If the matches are incorrect, all of the data is wrong as well.  We ensure that the matching is accurate through our data collection interview process, where our survey specialists interview each participant.

Q:        Can I see how many INGOs are signed up so far in my country?

A:         You can view the participants in each country on the survey by going to the pages under "Country Survey Status" section on the home page.

Q:         Is there a significant time commitment to participate in the survey?

A:         Participation requires a minimum effort on your part. No paper to fill out – data is collected over the telephone.   A limited amount of data is collected, and our staff does all of the job matching for you!

Q:         Is there a minimum number of countries or staff needed to participate?

A:         Your organisation can participate in 1 to 140 countries depending on your needs.  However if you have less than 15 local staff in a given location we will ask you to participate where you can and submit data and assist you by allowing you to purchase but not be a full participant in locations where you do not have enough staff.  This is because Birches Group's experience informs us that 15 local staff and above is better to ensure robust in-country salary application and internal relativity.

Q:         Is the LiNGO (Local Salary Surveys for the NGO Community) Survey related to Learning for International NGOs?

A:         No, but you can visit their website at www.lingos.org to learn more about the organization.

Q:        How is the LiNGO survey different from other surveys?  We’ve already participated in some surveys this year – what is the added value of this one?

A:         We understand that there are many surveys out there, and sometimes it seems they all do the same thing.  LiNGO is different in several ways:
-- A survey shaped and led by a steering group of INGO members

-- A survey forum and community which will allow you to not only benchmark with your peers but network online and discuss the surveys with educational webinars and tools to help you apply the data accurately

-- A consistent approach across all countries using a methodology that has been tested in over 140 countries globally

-- A comprehensive survey containing all of the key elements of compensation, including many that are overlooked by other survey providers

-- The confidence and security of using third-party experts, saving you time and ensuring confidentiality and high-quality results

-- State-of-the-art technology to manage the survey data

-- Options for both local, regional, and headquarters access from the same datasets

Q:        Will this survey provide us with any benchmarking for internationally recruited positions?

A:         No.  This survey is limited to locally engaged staff.  However, both InsideNGO, and People in Aid/ORC Worldwide offer surveys for international staff.

Q:        What will the survey outputs look like?  Do you have some samples?

A:         There are sample outputs on our LiNGO website. See Sample Country Reports

Q:        I know some other organisations that would benefit from participation in my country? Can they join, too?

A:         Yes!  We would be happy to invite them – there is a place to provide their contact information on the registration.  Or you can mention it to them and give them our contact information.

Q:        How much does survey participation cost?

A:         For 2008, we offered a special pilot price, but now to reflect the actual cost of running the survey the following prices apply:

-- Per country US$900 for NGOs
-- Per country US$1,500 for non-NGO members of InsideNGO or People-in-Aid. See detail price list here.

Q:        Will you be adding more countries?

A:         We plan to keep expanding the survey to address the needs of the sector; so, it will respond to demand.

Q.        Who should serve as a survey respondent?

A.        The survey respondent should be the person who actually submits the registration form.  This will be the person who provided your organisation’s data to the survey.  The survey respondent will be asked to participate in a 60 to 90 minute phone interview with the Birches Group.

Q.         How will I know that my registration has been processed?

A.         You will receive a confirmation email within 7 days of registering for the LiNGO surveys.

Q.         How can I prepare for the interview with the analyst from the Birches Group?

A.         Download Salary Survey Interview Guide

Q.         Whom should I contact if I have questions about the registration process?

A.         Please email us at survey.registration@lingosurvey.com

Q.         I’ve participated in the survey, and received an email indicating the report would be  delivered on a certain date.  I did not              receive it.  Whom should I contact?

A.        Please check the country survey page on the website.  This page should indicate when the survey results have been distributed.  If it             is past the date indicated on the website, and you still have not received your report, please email us at info@lingosurvey.com
